Photographer Juanita Richards and Stylist Shandi Alexander channel the spirit of Kumpo, a Diola symbol of renewal, weaving together castaway garments, Indigenous textiles, and a material practice rooted in restoration. For the Indigenous Diola communities of Casamance in southern Senegal, the sacred mangrove forests known as Le Bois Sacrés, or “The Sacred Grove,” have long held deep spiritual and ceremonial significance.
Now, these once-revered ecosystems face growing threats as the tide carries in the remnants of fast fashion and plastic pollution, disrupting both the landscape and its cultural legacy.
