The Drawing Room book brings together photographs taken by Rich Stapleton of modern homes in England for a collaborative exhibition with The Modern House, shown at The Cold Press in autumn 2022.

The project originated from conversations about The Modern House’s five principles of a well-designed home: space, light, materials, nature and decoration. Over three years, a body of work has grown that explores these ideas in some of the country’s most thoughtfully-designed spaces.

Photographs made in contemporary spaces such as Nigel Slater’s London townhouse, Isabel Ettedgui’s Tudor cottage in Petersham and John Pawson’s Oxfordshire farmhouse are complemented by landmark modernist homes such as The Homewood in Surrey, designed by Patrick Gwynne in 1938, and 2 Willow Road in Hampstead, Erno? Goldfinger’s seminal modernist home.

Stapleton’s personal connection with many of the people whose homes are featured has allowed him to closely observe and capture both the beauty of these spaces and the private lives that inhabit them.
